What Paul Williams Still Alive Is About
In the seventies Paul Williams was everywhere as a songwriter, a singer and an actor, and then he disappeared for most of the eighties and nineties. Stephen Kessler had been a fan since childhood and did not know, when he started, whether the man was still alive. He was, and he was still performing. From there the 2011 documentary goes somewhere strange: Kessler wants to make the film he has in his head, Williams has no intention of telling his past that way, and the two of them argue about it with the camera running. What comes out is less a portrait of a musician than a film about the distance between adoration and an actual person.
