What Peacock Is About
From the end of the seventies into the mid-eighties, a working family in a small Chinese town. Parents and three siblings live in the same cramped house. The sister wants to be a parachutist and will risk anything for that dream. The elder brother has an intellectual disability and is caught between the family's shame and its protectiveness. The younger brother grows up watching both of them. It is Gu Changwei's first film as a director. Gu had been one of the best known cinematographers in Chinese cinema; here he handed the camera to Yang Shu and stepped behind the telling instead. The story is divided into three parts and the same years are told separately through each of the three siblings. The film won the Jury Grand Prix, the Silver Bear, at the Berlin Film Festival in 2005.
