What Phone Call from a Stranger Is About
Four passengers on a plane get to know each other and tell their lives over the journey. The plane goes down and only one of them survives. The survivor decides to find the families of the dead and pass on what he was told. As he goes from door to door, what he learns brings something to light about his own life as well. Jean Negulesco's film is built from linked stories: each visit works like a separate chapter. Shelley Winters, Gary Merrill and Michael Rennie are in the cast, and Bette Davis appears in a short but much talked about part. The telling judges nobody; it shows the gap between the life people describe while travelling and the life they left at home.
