What Port of Shadows Is About
A soldier walks out of the fog into the port of Le Havre and never explains what he is running from. That withholding is the method of the whole film. Marcel Carne and his writer Jacques Prevert build a world of people with erased pasts, a shack on the waterfront, and an exit that keeps refusing to open. Jean Gabin plays exhaustion as a kind of hardness, and Michele Morgan answers it with a face that has not yet learned to expect anything. The fog is studio made and obviously so, which is the point: it is moral weather, not real weather.
