What Porto of My Childhood Is About
At ninety three, Manoel de Oliveira goes back to the Porto of his own childhood. He narrates it himself, and what he narrates is both documentary and fiction, since the stories he heard as a boy and the moments he remembers are staged with actors. The film moves like a search: fragments of memory, traces, testimonies, song lyrics, photographs. It spirals out from the ruins of the house where he was born towards the streets of the city where Portuguese cinema was born in 1896. Images from his own earlier films run through it, Douro Faina Fluvial, Aniki Bóbó and The Painter and the City, along with newsreels of the period. It was a French, Portuguese and Belgian co-production.
