What Benilde or the Virgin Mother Is About
Benilde is a young woman raised inside a religious family and kept almost entirely apart from the world. When it becomes clear that she is pregnant she says this is a miracle, and she does not go back on what she says. Her family is shaken; to them the girl is out of her mind and this account of it cannot be accepted. The film does not say which side is right and stays in a space where both explanations remain standing. The account never leaves the inside of one house and deliberately keeps its staging close to the theatre; its source is a work for the stage. Maria Amelia Matta appears in Manoel de Oliveira’s hundred and twelve minute Portuguese film, completed in 1975.
