What The Cannibals Is About
Every line of Manoel de Oliveira’s film is sung: this is an opera, with a score written directly for the screen by the composer João Paes, from a fantastical tale by Álvaro do Carvalhal. A narrator introduces the wedding of the beautiful Marguerite and the Viscount d’Aveleda, held over the objections of her scheming former lover Don Juan. Then the bridal chamber reveals what the viscount has been hiding, and the night turns into a nightmare in which Portuguese high society consumes itself. Oliveira stages the horror at a theatrical distance, in held shots, refusing to make it visceral. The film was shown at Cannes in 1988.
