What Visit, or Memories and Confessions Is About
Debt forces Manoel de Oliveira out of the house in Porto he lived in for many years, and he makes the film inside that house, looking straight at the viewer and talking about his family’s past, about cinema, about architecture and about what happened to him under the military dictatorship. It was shot in 1982 and, at his own wish, left at the film archive in Lisbon to be shown only after his death, where it waited for more than forty years. Oliveira died in April 2015 at the age of a hundred and six, and the sixty eight minute film opened in Portugal on 4 May 2015 and was presented in the Cannes Classics section the same year. Agustina Bessa-Luís wrote the text, with Diogo Dória and Teresa Madruga reading it.
