What Premeditated Murder Is About
Gorčin Stojanović’s 1995 film adapts Slobodan Selenić’s novel and lays two wars over each other. Jelena, living in Belgrade in the early nineties during Serbia’s war with Croatia, is preparing a book out of her grandmother’s diaries from the end of the Second World War. She takes up with Bogdan, a young soldier recovering from his wounds, and he helps her with the grandmother’s story: a triangle between an educated, brittle husband and an uneducated major who may have the power to save a political prisoner the grandmother cared about. While Jelena wonders which man was her grandfather, Bogdan has to decide about returning to the front. In 1996 it was voted among the best Serbian films ever made.
