What Print the Legend Is About
A documentary made in the years when three-dimensional printers were expected to become a household appliance any moment. Luis Lopez and Clay Tweel follow the companies that built the industry from the inside: MakerBot, Formlabs, Stratasys, 3D Systems. The story starts in a garage and continues through venture money, patent litigation and partners falling out. Its most contested stretch is the interviews with Cody Wilson, who argues for printing guns at home. It is less interested in who won than in what a technology loses as it turns into a set of corporations. It took a jury prize for editing and storytelling at SXSW in 2014 and went to Netflix the same year. The years since have only made its central question more interesting.
