A Russian unit is ambushed in the Caucasus and two soldiers survive: Sasha, who has done this before, and Vanya, barely out of training. They are taken prisoner in a mountain village by a man called Abdul whose own son is in a Russian jail and who wants a trade. As the captivity drags on, something forms between the two soldiers, and something quieter between Vanya and Abdul's young daughter. Sergei Bodrov moved Tolstoy's story A Prisoner in the Caucasus into the Chechen war. Vanya is played by the director's son, Sergei Bodrov Jr. It was nominated for the foreign language Oscar in 1997.
