What Private Confessions Is About
The film is built out of five conversations, and a troubled marriage stands in the middle of them. Anna, whose conscience will not leave her alone, tells her uncle Jacob, a priest, that she has been having an affair. He presses her to say it to her husband Henrik as well. The account moves back and forth in time and tests what telling the truth is actually good for: Anna’s confessions absolve nobody and open new wounds instead. Ingmar Bergman wrote the screenplay with his own parents in mind. Pernilla August and Max von Sydow appear in Liv Ullmann’s hundred and twenty five minute Swedish film, completed in 1996.
