Faithless

An old director, alone in his house, summons a woman in his imagination for the screenplay he means to write. Her name is Marianne, and she tells him her own story. Marianne is an actress; her husband Markus is a conductor, and David, a friend to them both, is a director. What starts between Marianne and David is first an affair, then a decision, then something that takes everyone's life apart. There is also a small girl in the middle of it. Liv Ullmann directed the film from Ingmar Bergman's screenplay, drawn largely from an episode in Bergman's own life; the old director in the film is called Bergman. Lena Endre plays Marianne and Erland Josephson the director. It competed at Cannes in 2000.
