Manuel Buendía was among the most widely read journalists in Mexico. In his column Red Privada he wrote about corruption, organised crime and drug trafficking. On 30 May 1984, in Mexico City, he was shot from behind as he left his office and walked to his car. The case went unsolved for years, with many irregularities including the loss of evidence. In 1989 several figures from the by then defunct Federal Security Directorate were arrested. The documentary tells both the journalist’s work and the connections behind the killing. Where the film looks is the line between politics and trafficking. The account moves through archive footage and case documents. The hundred minutes are given to a single case. Manuel Alcalá’s Mexican documentary was completed in 2021.
