Project A-Ko

Katsuhiko Nishijima's 1986 anime began as a parody and became a thing in itself. A city destroyed by a meteor has been rebuilt sixteen years later, and A-ko, an extraordinarily strong high school student, starts at her new school with her guileless friend C-ko. B-ko, a wealthy student there, takes an interest in C-ko and a fight begins with A-ko that grows every day until it becomes a battle with giant robots. In the background an alien ship waits above the city. The film refers to the popular anime and superhero conventions of the eighties, and the humour is fast and exaggerated. The story itself is deliberately absurd. It became a cult title in the West in the nineties. Who it's for: viewers who like eighties anime and parody. Who it's not for: anyone expecting a meaningful story; the film is not aiming for one.
