What Prom Night in Mississippi Is About
At the high school in Charleston, Mississippi, black and white students sit in the same classrooms, but the senior prom has been held separately for decades. In 1997 Morgan Freeman went to the school and offered to pay for the prom if it were held once and integrated, and was turned down; in 2008 he made the same offer and this time it was accepted. The documentary follows the preparations for that prom, what the students say among themselves and the resistance from some of the families. Paul Saltzman’s ninety minute production shows how the separation was handed down from one generation to the next even though the school had been formally integrated in 1970. It was completed in 2009 and broadcast by HBO.
