What Propaganda: The Art of Selling Lies Is About
The documentary follows how propaganda works, from cave paintings to today’s social media feeds and manufactured images. According to the film the tools change but the method stays the same; religious figures, politicians and marketers use the same mechanism. The account proceeds by a question: if we grow up surrounded by propaganda, how are we to know what is true. Among those who speak are contemporary artists making political work, who describe using the conventions of deception knowingly. The film’s own frame and the examples it gives are its own choice. The documentary is itself a work trying to persuade; it cannot altogether avoid using the method it describes, and it does not hide that. The account leaves that contradiction to the viewer. Larry Weinstein’s ninety minute documentary was completed in 2019.
