What Pulp: a Film About Life, Death & Supermarkets Is About
Florian Habicht's 2014 documentary is built around Pulp's last British concert, in Sheffield, but its real interest is not the band so much as the city they came from. Habicht turns the camera on the people of Sheffield: the newsagent, the market trader, choir members, car mechanics. Ordinary people reading the lyrics of Common People explain who the song is about far better than any concert film could. Jarvis Cocker and the band talk about fame, love and mortality, but the film refuses to keep them at the centre. That choice breaks the music documentary template and may disappoint some fans. There is only a limited amount of concert footage; this is not a record of a farewell but a portrait of a place. Who it's for: Pulp listeners and viewers who like films that break the music documentary template. Who it's not for: anyone expecting a full concert record, or looking for orderly information about the band's history.
