What Queen of Hearts Is About

Eddie Luca is the youngest son of an Italian family that has moved to London. The family starts with nothing and opens a small cafe in an Italian neighbourhood; in time the cafe becomes both their living and the centre of the family. Then the father loses the cafe, the house and his wedding ring at gambling, and everything comes apart in a single day. The film tells the story of a migrant family from a child’s view and in a fairy tale tone; the real and the imagined pass into each other from time to time. The account does not ask pity for poverty; it shows the stubbornness and the attachments inside a family. Anita Zagaria and Joseph Long appear in Jon Amiel’s hundred and twelve minute British film, completed in 1989.
