In 1971, with war approaching, Sehmat, a Kashmiri university student, is married at her father's request to the son of a Pakistani officer. The purpose is plain: enter the house and collect information. After a few weeks of training the young woman walks into a real family and starts living among people who treat her well. Meghna Gulzar adapted Harinder Sikka's book. The real subject is not tradecraft but how an assignment consumes a person; the more Sehmat succeeds the more she loses, and the film does not present this as heroism. Alia Bhatt carries the part in silence. The tension is built not in the large scenes but in small acts like listening at a phone or hiding a letter. Who it is for: viewers who like spy drama and restrained storytelling in Indian cinema. Who it is not for: anyone expecting action.
