Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

An Indian film set in Amritsar. Surinder works for the electricity company and is quiet and thoroughly ordinary. On the wedding day of Taani, the daughter of his old teacher, there is an accident and the groom dies. The dying teacher asks him to marry her. Surinder agrees. The marriage takes place, but Taani does not love him and says so openly. They live in the same house, they talk, and there is nothing between them. Taani enrols in a dance class. Surinder goes there as someone else: he shaves his moustache, changes his hair, takes off his glasses and invents Raj, a talkative and confident man. Through the classes his wife grows close to that second man. The question is whom she is falling for, a person or a manner. Surinder asks himself the same thing and does not like the answer. The narrative makes open references to the known patterns of Indian cinema; in one section a number of well known actors appear in brief scenes. Shah Rukh Khan plays both Surinder and Raj. Anushka Sharma plays Taani; it is her first film. Aditya Chopra directed. Exactly right for anyone who likes classic Indian romance. For a viewer looking for realism, the fact that the disguise would fool nobody is the film's weakest point.
