What Raid Is About
Raid is an ex-criminal and drifter who comes and goes as he pleases and has been out of the country a long time. On his return he learns that his former partner Tarja died in a fire, and it does not take him long to work out that the fire was set. Around the same time Jansson, an inspector he knows from before, gets in touch about the killing of a protester. Once Raid starts pulling at both, he finds they lead to the same place. Tapio Piirainen's film brings to the screen a character Finland already knew from television. The cold, taciturn northern crime story is exactly right here: little light, few lines, and violence that arrives without warning. Kai Lehtinen's Raid is neither a hero nor quite a criminal; he is simply somebody who finishes things by his own rules.
