What Rainy Dog Is About
Rainy Dog, directed by Takashi Miike, is the second film in his Black Society trilogy, alongside Shinjuku Triad Society and Ley Lines, linked only thematically rather than by plot. Shot entirely on location in Taipei, Taiwan, it follows a Japanese hitman in exile who unexpectedly becomes a father; compared to the first film's loud, brutal style, Rainy Dog takes a markedly quieter, more contemplative approach. Who it's for: anyone curious about the calmest, most melancholy entry in Miike's violent trilogy, shot on location in Taiwan. Who it's not for: viewers expecting the loud, explosive violence of the trilogy's other films, since this one carries a much slower, more reflective tone.
