In a remote Icelandic valley, two brothers who have not spoken in forty years keep their sheep on adjoining land. When disease appears in the flock, both receive the same instruction: cull everything. Grimur Hakonarson shoots this less as a family drama than as a survival story, because for these men the animals are not a livelihood but an identity. Dialogue is scarce and the humour is bone dry, and the method the brothers use to send each other messages is both the funniest detail in the film and the saddest. The landscape is beautiful and never once reassuring.
