What Ray of Sunshine Is About
The film is set in Vienna during the Great Depression. Hans has lost his work and his home. He has nothing left. One day he goes to the river meaning to end his life. A young woman named Anna is there for the same reason. When she goes into the water, Hans gives up his own plan. He pulls her out of the river. The city pays him a small sum for the rescue. That money becomes their starting capital. Hans and Anna stay together. They get by setting up small trades and taking day labour. Hardship comes round again after a while. This time the help comes from the neighbours. A kind of solidarity forms in the housing block where they live. The film ends somewhere hopeful. Annabella and Gustav Fröhlich appear in the eighty seven minute film, an Austrian production Pál Fejős finished in 1933.
