Red Path

Lotfi Achour's 2025 Tunisian film follows two teenagers grazing animals in the mountains. An armed group attacks them; Nizar, sixteen, is killed, and Ashraf, fourteen, is made to carry the news back to the family. The film is about the aftermath rather than the event. Ashraf returns to the village and none of the adults know what to do; the narrative gives the weight the boy cannot carry through sequences of imagination. It draws on a real case. The cast were found in the region. The violence is not shown on screen, but its effect spreads across the whole film. Who it's for: viewers of North African cinema and narratives of trauma. Who it's not for: viewers for whom a film about a murdered child would sit heavily.
