Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein

Gautham Vasudev Menon's 2001 Indian film is his own Hindi remake of his Tamil picture. Madhav falls for Reena the moment he sees her, and on learning that her family is about to marry her to someone else he takes on that man's identity and enters the house as the prospective groom. The comedy comes from keeping the lie going, but the film also takes seriously the hurt that follows when it is exposed. It did not draw the expected audience on release and gained a large following later through television and the internet, becoming a cult title. Harris Jayaraj's songs account for a good part of that interest. How the hero's behaviour reads today is debatable and the film does not question it. Who it's for: viewers who like Indian romantic comedy and popular cinema of the early 2000s. Who it's not for: anyone who will find a romance built on deception uncomfortable.
