What Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu Is About
Gautham Vasudev Menon's 2022 Tamil film is about a young man who goes from Tamil Nadu to Bombay for work. Muthu comes to send money home; the people from his own region living in the neighbourhood where he stays are inside a gang structure, and step by step he becomes part of it. The film does not present the violence as a story of ascent, showing that he wants to turn back at every stage and cannot. It builds the Tamil labouring community in Bombay in detail and puts language and belonging at the centre. A. R. Rahman's music and the night images of the city set its texture. This part ends so as to continue in a sequel. Silambarasan plays the role quietly and inwardly. Who it's for: viewers who like Tamil crime drama and the work of Gautham Menon. Who it's not for: anyone expecting a completed story; the film is built to be continued.
