The casting here is itself a comment. Among the men who might be the Auschwitz block commander Zev is looking for are Bruno Ganz and Jürgen Prochnow. Ganz played Hitler in Downfall; Prochnow was the captain in Das Boot. Egoyan lines up two faces that carry German cinema's image of the war and leaves the audience unable to tell which is the right one. Zev, in the early stages of dementia, travels across North America guided by a handwritten letter from his friend at the care home, another Auschwitz survivor. He is to find and kill the man who murdered his family. His memory resets each morning, so he has to read the letter again every time. Benjamin August wrote the screenplay. Christopher Plummer plays Zev, in what Egoyan called the career-defining performance of his life, with Martin Landau as his friend Max. It screened at Venice. Who it is for: viewers who like thrillers that hold age, memory and revenge together and are built to keep their ending hidden. Who it is not for: anyone who dislikes a film resting on a twist. The whole weight lands on the final turn, and several critics found that turn too mechanical for the subject.
