What Renaissance Is About
In the Paris of 2054 a young scientist named Ilona is abducted from a corporate giant called Avalon and the case falls to a policeman, Karas. The further he follows it the less it is a missing person case and the more it becomes the company's research into immortality. Christian Volckman shot it with motion capture and reduced the whole thing to black and white, with no intermediate tone, only absolute black and absolute white, so the image sits somewhere between a comic panel and a shadow play. The city follows the same logic: glass streets laid over historic Paris like a cage. The narrative follows the classic noir template and the real invention is in the form. It took the grand prize at Annecy. Who it is for: viewers who like animated science fiction and graphic experiment. Who it is not for: anyone wanting originality in the story, which travels familiar roads.
