What Respectable: The Mary Millington Story Is About
The documentary tells the life of Mary Millington, a well known adult film actress in the Britain of the seventies. The road she took from photographs to films, growing up in a family that delivered milk, the shop she opened and her collisions with the obscenity laws of the day are taken in turn. Repeated raids on the shop, pressure from the police and a tax demand larger than she could pay shaped her last years; Millington took her own life in 1979, at thirty three. The film gives this through witnesses, without turning it into a curiosity. Simon Sheridan’s hundred and nine minute British documentary was completed in 2016.
