What Roaring Years Is About

A small southern town in Italy under fascism. Omero Battifiori arrives to sell insurance and the town gets him wrong, taking him for an inspector sent quietly from Rome. From that moment the mayor, the party secretary and every notable in the place set about ingratiating themselves with him. Things hidden for years start coming out one by one. Omero, for a long while, has no idea what is going on. Luigi Zampa's film takes Gogol's The Government Inspector and moves it into fascist Italy, with Nino Manfredi in the lead. From inside a comedy it describes what the regime looked like in the provinces, and the fear and the flattery that came with it.
