What He Thief, She Thief Is About
Cencio lives off small thefts in Rome and goes back inside at regular intervals. One day he meets Cesira, who soon becomes both his partner in life and his partner in the work. Together they plan a big job on a jeweller's. But a run of luck comes to an end. Luigi Zampa's Italian comedy uses Alberto Sordi exactly where he works best: a Roman who thinks himself sharp and is in fact hopeless. Sylva Koscina plays Cesira. The telling does not romanticise thieving; the joke of the film is that the man lands in the same place every time. The tone is light and the humour entirely local.
