Robinson in Space

Robinson is given a commission. What he is to investigate is the problem of England. Exactly what that problem is never gets stated. Robinson is never seen on screen. A narrator speaks in his place. The narrator describes seven separate excursions. They travel from one end of the country to the other. The places they go are not the usual tourist stops. Ports, power stations, prisons and manufacturing plants. Literary connections get woven in between. There are a few conventional landscapes as well. The film sits between documentary and fiction. The images hold still while the voice keeps talking. Paul Scofield narrates the seventy eight minute documentary, a British production Patrick Keiller finished in 1997.
