In August 2012, at a preseason football party in Steubenville, Ohio, a young woman was sexually assaulted by members of the high school football team. For a while the matter stayed inside the town. Then a crime blogger, Alexandria Goddard, collected and published the photographs, messages and videos shared on social media that night. The case became national news. Nancy Schwartzman's documentary looks less at the assault than at the silence around it: who saw, who shared, who laughed it off, and how far the town went to protect its team. The film's harshest passage is not the assault but the messages sent that night. The narrative does not show the survivor or use her name. Two players were convicted as a result of the case.
