What Roman Scandals Is About
A good hearted young man is run out of West Rome, Oklahoma, his thoroughly corrupt hometown. He falls asleep and dreams himself into ancient Rome, where he lands in the middle of court intrigue and a plot to murder the Emperor. Frank Tuttle's 1933 musical comedy carries the freedom of the years before the Hays code: songs, crowded dance numbers and open political jabs all in the same picture. Eddie Cantor leads and carries the show on his own brisk comic style. The big choreography and elaborate sets are a good demonstration of what a thirties studio musical actually looked like.
