Suspense

The owner of an ice-skating revue promotes a peanut vendor to a management job after the man suggests improvements to the act of the show’s star, who is also the owner’s wife. Before long he notices that his new manager is paying his wife more attention than seems right, and the film turns into a noir built on jealousy, murder and a faked death. The skating is not decoration; it is where the suspense is staged. Frank Tuttle directed from a screenplay by Philip Yordan, and Karl Struss photographed it. Barry Sullivan leads with Belita, a former Olympic skater. Produced by the King brothers, it was the most expensive picture Monogram had made to that point; sources give different budget figures, so no single number is stated here.
