What Romance for Lovers Is About
Andrei Konchalovsky’s 1974 film tells one love story in two different registers. Sergei and Tanya are in love; he is conscripted into the marines, his armoured vehicle is swept into the sea during a rescue operation, and his family is notified of his death. Tanya marries the childhood friend who has always loved her. But Sergei has not died: after a long winter he and the wounded man he saved are found on a deserted island. He comes home to find everything gone. The first half of the film is heightened, sung and poetic, the second flatly ordinary, and the death the hero suffers is not physical but the death of that first register.
