Rose of Nevada

In a Cornish fishing village, a boat called the Rose of Nevada that vanished thirty years ago returns without its crew. The owner decides to send it out again with a new one. Nick, a family man who needs the work, and Liam, a drifter, sign on, and the grizzled skipper Murgey goes with them. Returning from one voyage they find themselves in the past, taken by the village for the original crew. Mark Jenkin shot the film on Bolex 16mm cameras. The worn, timeless texture of the image is not incidental; the story itself leaves it unclear where in time it sits. The sound was recorded separately and laid over afterwards, which adds to the strangeness. George MacKay plays Nick, Callum Turner plays Liam, and Francis Magee the skipper. It screened in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival in 2025. Who it's for: Viewers who like formally experimental British cinema, stories where folk horror meets science fiction, and Mark Jenkin's manner. Who it's not for: The narrative deliberately withholds explanation and the technical choices are wearing for some viewers. Anyone wanting a clear resolution will not get one.
