What Roses for the Prosecutor Is About
April 1945. The soldier Rudi is sentenced to death by the court martial judge Dr Schramm for stealing two bars of chocolate. He escapes the firing squad at the last moment and has scraped a living as a street pedlar ever since. Years later Schramm is a respected public prosecutor. Running into Rudi by chance, he is afraid of being exposed and has the man arrested and roughed up to frighten him out of town. Wolfgang Staudte's 1959 film aims at how judges of the old regime kept their seats in West Germany, in a comic register that never softens the point.
