An old man tells a group of children his own story. As a boy he was called Little Muck. When his father died his relatives put him out of the house, and he went off into the desert looking for the merchant who sells good fortune. On the way he ends up at a woman's house; she keeps a great many cats and wants to make Muck her servant. He escapes by stealing a pair of magic shoes that let him run faster than anyone in the country. Then he goes to the palace, and that is where the real trouble starts. Wolfgang Staudte directs the East German film; a hundred minutes, adapted from Wilhelm Hauff's fairy tale. It remains the biggest audience the East German DEFA studio ever drew.
