What Samadhi Part 1: Maya, the Illusion of the Self Is About
The documentary takes up the Sanskrit term samadhi, a word pointing to a state of union described in various traditions of belief and in various paths of self inquiry. The film sets out to explain the idea through quotations gathered from texts and teachings written across history. The account is not an informational documentary but an appeal made from where it stands; it treats the idea of the self as an illusion and works at persuading the viewer of that. The first part of a series, it runs sixty minutes and builds its telling on image, music and a narrating voice; nobody speaks on screen. Daniel Schmidt’s film was completed in 2017.
