What Samurai Vendetta Is About
Two good natured samurai end up on opposite sides of the feud between the retainers of Lord Asano and the family of Lord Kira, the feud that will lead to the famous revenge of the forty seven ronin. The friendship between them runs against the accounts of the sides they belong to, and nobody gets to stand where they would like. The film tells the well known epic from its edge; at the centre is not the great revenge but the two men left in its shadow. Raizo Ichikawa and Shintaro Katsu appear in Kazuo Mori’s hundred and nine minute Japanese film, completed in 1959.
