What Vendetta of a Samurai Is About
The famous swordsman Araki Mataemon helps a young samurai whose brother has been killed to take his revenge, and the two sides meet at a crossroads in 1634. The film first shows the version of the event as it is told among the people: Mataemon cuts down thirty six men single-handed. Then it starts again and gives what is closer to the record; the man killed only two, the other side are not villains, and the fighting is long, exhausting and frightening. Akira Kurosawa wrote the screenplay, and the question of how a legend gets enlarged comes from there. Toshiro Mifune and Takashi Shimura appear in Kazuo Mori’s eighty two minute Japanese film.
