What A Certain Killer Is About
A soldier back from the war works in a small restaurant in post war Japan. In time he starts taking contract killings for the yakuza gangs he is in contact with. The man neither boasts nor explains; he does the work the way a cook does, quietly and in order. The film builds the account in pieces rather than in sequence, and who killed whom, and why, only comes together at the end. Showing killing as a habit rather than as excitement is what sets the film apart within its own genre. Raizo Ichikawa plays the lead in Kazuo Mori’s eighty two minute Japanese film, completed in 1967.
