What Under the Open Sky Is About
Miwa Nishikawa's film follows a middle-aged former yakuza released after thirteen years inside for murder. Mikami has spent most of his life in prison and outside can neither find work nor manage his temper. Hoping to trace the mother he was separated from as a child, he applies to a television programme and meets a young producer. The film asks whether society actually offers a second chance, patiently and without manufacturing big dramatic moments: job applications, a driving test, a welfare desk, dealings with neighbours. Koji Yakusho carries the man without turning him into either a victim or a hero. It is adapted from a novel by Ryūzō Saki and was nominated in many categories at the Japanese Academy Awards, best picture among them. Who it's for: viewers who like quiet, character-led Japanese drama and stories about re-entering society. Who it's not for: anyone expecting crime and yakuza action; the film has already left that world behind.
