Sanju

An Indian film about the life of an actor. It opens with a writer. Sanjay Dutt believes what has been written about him is wrong and is trying to persuade a biographer. The narrative turns back from there. The late 1970s: the father is a well known actor and the son is about to enter films. During the shooting of his first picture his mother falls ill and the young man starts using drugs. The first part is the period of addiction. His relationship with his friend Kamli forms the emotional spine: treatment, escape and return. The second part moves to the 1990s. After events in Bombay a weapon is found at his house and he is arrested on a terrorism charge. A case running for years, periods in prison and the conduct of the press make up the second half. The film was criticised as an open defence; the narrative presents the press as chiefly responsible and lightens the character's own. Ranbir Kapoor plays Sanjay; the resemblance and the physical transformation were the most discussed thing about it. Paresh Rawal plays the father and Vicky Kaushal his friend Kamli. Rajkumar Hirani directed. It was among the highest-grossing Indian films of its year. An effective choice for anyone who likes biographical films and Indian cinema. For a viewer expecting a neutral narrative, the film stands on its subject's side and does not hide it.
