In the nineties Martin Verfondern and Margo Pool left Amsterdam and settled in Santoalla, a nearly abandoned hamlet in the mountains of Galicia in northwest Spain, wanting to build a self-sufficient life. Relations with the only other residents, a local family, were good at first and then soured over grazing rights and property. Martin took the dispute to court and won; a few weeks later, in January 2010, he disappeared. Andrew Becker and Daniel Mehrer’s documentary follows both Margo staying on in the village to wait and the course of the investigation over the years. In 2014 remains were found and the file became a murder inquiry. The film is not trying to convict anyone; it looks at how the distance between two sides grew as far as it did.
