What Saraband for Dead Lovers Is About
Sixteen year old Sophie Dorothea is pushed into a loveless marriage with Prince George Louis of Hanover. Court life offers her nothing, and she attaches herself to Count Konigsmark, a Swedish soldier of fortune. Their plan to get away runs straight into Countess Platen, the prince's discarded mistress, who wants revenge. Basil Dearden made it in 1948 as Ealing's first Technicolor feature and the studio's most expensive production to that date, and Douglas Slocombe's colour photography helped earn an Oscar nomination for art direction. One correction to our record: she is called a queen there, but Sophie Dorothea never became queen of England.
