Sarbjit

In 1990 Sarabjit Singh crossed into Pakistan while drunk, from his village right beside the border in Punjab. Pakistan charged him with espionage and with the bombings carried out in Punjab that year; he was tried and sentenced to death. The Indian side maintained he was only a farmer who had lost his way. His sister Dalbir Kaur spent twenty-two years trying to get him out. Sarabjit Singh was attacked by other inmates at Kot Lakhpat prison in Lahore in 2013 and died six days later. Omung Kumar's film tells the case from Dalbir's side and takes his innocence as given; the verdict of the Pakistani courts is not argued with in the film. It is a file still open between the two countries. Randeep Hooda plays Sarabjit and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan plays Dalbir. Hooda lost a great deal of weight for the part, and his performance became the most discussed thing about the film.
